Praise Be to Hanuman

Saw Black Panther on Monday, and it was great. So for Fanart Friday, here’s… M’Baku the Man-Ape?

M'Baku the Man-ApeArt by Dave "The Knave" White.

For those of you who are only familiar with M’Baku from Winston Duke’s portrayal in the movie, this is probably a shock. The comic version of Man-Ape is not a cool, honorable rival-style antagonist. He is depicted as a ruthless killer who gained his powers by killing and drinking the blood of a sacred white gorilla. And then wearing its skin like the world’s most disturbing Garanimals onesie. Oh, and just in case a black man depicted as a bloodthirsty savage and dressed up as a gorilla wasn’t enough they also put a grass skirt on him.

So, yeah, he’s #problematic.

On the other hand, the image of his head poking out through the gorilla’s mouth never fails to make me laugh. Same goes for longtime Spider-Man friend/foe the Grizzly, too, come to think of it.
